About

¡Hola, food friends! I’m Sophia Ramirez

How My Love of Cooking Started

Some of my earliest and most vivid memories are of my abuela’s tiny kitchen in Miami, filled with the sounds of sizzling plantains, the rhythmic press of her hands making arepas, and the constant hum of Spanish conversation. I was always underfoot, sneaking tastes of black beans and learning to roll pastelitos, though mine were never as perfect as hers.

sophia grand mother

My grandmother didn’t use recipes—she cooked with her heart and her hands. A pinch of this, a handful of that, all seasoned with stories of growing up in Cuba and building a new life in Florida. I remember helping her prepare for Sunday gatherings, where the table would groan under the weight of arroz con pollo, yuca con mojo, and flan that wobbled like a dream. It was there I learned that food is love, that cooking connects us to our roots, and that the best meals are made for sharing with the people you hold dear.

my family

That bilingual kitchen—where Latin flavors met Southern comfort, where Spanish and English mixed as easily as the ingredients in her sofrito—shaped everything I am today. Years later, after working in restaurant kitchens and test kitchens across the country, I realized I wanted to create that same feeling of warmth, connection, and bold, unapologetic flavor for home cooks everywhere. That’s why whiskplate was born.

My Culinary Philosophy & Approach

My cooking is a celebration of duality—Latin warmth meets Southern comfort, bold flavors meet simple techniques, tradition meets today’s busy life. I believe you shouldn’t have to choose between food that’s fast and food that’s fabulous.

Core Principles:

  • Bold Flavors, Simple Steps: Maximum taste without overwhelming complexity or obscure ingredients
  • Cultural Roots, Modern Twists: Honoring traditional recipes while making them accessible for today’s kitchens
  • Cooking With Confidence: Building skills one recipe at a time, so you trust yourself in the kitchen
  • Food Is Love: Every recipe is designed to be shared, to bring people together, to create moments

My Specialties:

  • Latin Fusion Cooking: Blending the vibrant flavors of Cuba, Mexico, and the Caribbean with classic American comfort food
  • Rice & Bean Mastery: Because every home cook deserves perfect rice and soulful beans every single time
  • Family-Style Meals: Generous, crowd-pleasing dishes that feed a crowd and leave everyone asking for seconds
  • Bright, Fresh Flavors: Teaching home cooks how to build layers of flavor with citrus, herbs, and spices
  • Desserts With Heritage: Modern twists on classic Latin sweets like flan, tres leches, and arroz con leche

Recipe Development & Testing Process

Every recipe on whiskplate goes through my signature 6-step process to ensure it works in YOUR kitchen, not just mine:

  1. Inspiration & Research: Drawn from family traditions, reader requests, and my travels exploring Latin and Southern foodways
  2. Initial Development: Multiple rounds of testing in my home kitchen, tweaking until the flavors sing and the method is clear
  3. Real-Kitchen Adaptation: I retest every recipe using standard home equipment—no commercial tools allowed!
  4. Community Beta Testing: Recipes are sent to our amazing team of home cook testers across the country for honest, unfiltered feedback
  5. Nutritional Analysis: All information is calculated using professional software and reviewed for accuracy
  6. Final Polish: Only when a recipe achieves a 95%+ success rate in testing does it get photographed, styled, and published

The whiskplate Test Kitchen

My recipes are developed in a bright, sunny home kitchen in Miami, Florida, featuring:

  • A standard residential gas range (just like most of you have!)
  • A collection of well-loved, everyday tools—nothing fancy required
  • A dedicated photography space with natural light and colorful Latin-inspired props
  • A garden with fresh herbs, citrus trees, and tropical plants that inspire my cooking year-round

The “I” and the “We” at whiskplate

You’ll see both “I” and “we” throughout the site. “I” is me, Sophia—the founder, primary recipe developer, and the voice behind most of the content. I write the recipes, answer your emails, and pour my heart into every post.

“We” represents the incredible team of talented contributors who bring their own regional flavors and expertise to whiskplate. Their diverse perspectives—from Texas comfort to New York creativity, California freshness to Midwest baking—make this site so much richer than I could alone. Our extended community of home-cook testers is also part of the “we”—their honest feedback is the secret ingredient in every recipe.
