Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 tablespoon apple pie spice
  • 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1 cup unsweetened applesauce
  • 1/3 cup olive oil
  • 1/3 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 3 tablespoons butter, melted (for topping)
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar mixed with 1 teaspoon cinnamon (for topping)

Method

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease your donut pans thoroughly.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, 1 cup sugar, baking powder, baking soda, apple pie spice, and salt.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together the applesauce, olive oil, milk, and vanilla extract.
  4. Gently fold the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients until just combined, being careful not to over-mix.
  5. Transfer the batter to a piping bag or a large Ziploc bag with the corner snipped off.
  6. Pipe the batter into the donut molds, filling them about 3/4 of the way full.
  7. Bake for 12–15 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the donut comes out clean.
  8. While warm, brush the donuts with melted butter and dip them into the cinnamon-sugar mixture.

Notes

Ensure you do not over-mix the batter to maintain a light, fluffy crumb. Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days. These donuts are best enjoyed warm shortly after the cinnamon-sugar coating is applied.
